I grew up in central Pennsylvania always observing and drawing. As a child I had a collection of Madame Alexander dolls that I cherished. I also collected Dover Paper Dolls which I would play with for hours. After graduating high school, I moved to Philadelphia where I received a BFA in illustration from Moore College of Art & Design. After becoming a mother of 2 girls, I began my journey of making jointed flat paper dolls. A few years later, I began sculpting them.
Making my puppets engages my inner child esthetic. It gives me joy to create whimsical and sweet characters. I love drawing and sculpting people that I find inspiring such as book and movie characters, acrobats, dancers, famous artists, and sometimes even animals. I don’t fully understand why making puppets is so therapeutic for me but I’m making what feels right.
I use wire, aluminum foil, paper clay, acrylic paint and sometimes pastel, felt, tulle, and sheets of metallic gilding foil. I am inspired by historic costume, vintage toys, children’s books, and Victorian and Baroque nostalgia. My puppets are not meant as children’s toys but rather art pieces to be held, posed, or hung for display.
I now live in South Jersey working in a tiny studio in my home. Other than drawing and making puppets, I enjoy linoleum printmaking, Zumba, and listening to all kinds of music. I have a studio mate, Louie, a King Charles Caviler Spaniel that gives me love and companionship every day.
Thank you for taking an interest in learning about me and my work. I hope you can find joy and a connection to my puppets.
